COURSE DESCRIPTION

The International Mentoring Foundation for the Advancement of Higher Education (IMFAHE) works together with its partnered universities to provide the students with an online education of excellence. Scientific Careers may be challenging at certain stages. Through this course IMFAHE aims to provide young scientists with important information and guidance to stand out in their scientific careers.

3. PRACTICAL EXERCISES

Each student is expected to complete the practical exercises following the guidelines, information and advice presented at the masterclasses.

1. Individual Development Plan (myIDP)

Learn which career paths in Science fit better your values, personality and interests and plan accordingly. Follow the instructions to complete this exercise:

1.1. Go to "myIDP" website https://myidp.sciencecareers.org/

1.2. Create a new account

1.3. Complete all the sections of myIDP (Assessment, Career Exploration, Create a Plan, Implement Plan)

1.4. Download the Completion Certificate

In order to get the diploma, you should email the Completion Certificate

to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org).

 

2. Fellowship, internships and/or grant applications.

Use the information/ideas provided in the course and do your research to find fellowships, internships and grants that you believe can help you to achieve your career plans. In order to get the diploma, email to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org) the name of 3 fellowships, companies where you are interested to do internships, or grants together with a short sentence explaining how these opportunities could help you to fulfill your career plans.

 

3. Write and submit an abstract.

Based on the “Successful Abstract” lecture, write an abstract describing your work to submit to a conference. In order to get the diploma, you should email your abstract to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org). If you are part of the IMFAHE network, we encourage you to submit the abstract to be selected for an oral presentation at the VIII IMFAHE´s International Conference.

3. PRACTICAL EXERCISES

Each student is expected to complete the practical exercises following the guidelines, information and advice presented at the masterclasses.

1. Exercise to promote innovation: Apply the “Catalytic Questioning” method.

Find innovative solutions for a problem/issue/challenge that you are facing at wok/in your career/in yourprofessional life (you can also practice the exercise with your team, if you are part of one). In order to get thediploma, you should email to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org) the following exercise:

1. 1. Write down the challenge/problem/issue that you are facing.

1. 2. Write down as many questions as you can related to the challenge. You should invest 15-20 min and generate around 40-50 question (exhaustion).

1.3. Select 2-3 “catalytic” questions. They must disrupt the status quo, be surprising, generative,uncomfortable but worth time/energy to pursue.

1. 4. Get to work. Describe the actions/work that you plan to carry out to provide answers to the selectedquestions (what new observations/experiments you need to do, with whom do you need to talk to/network with,money/time investment, etc.).

2. Exercise to promote entrepreneurship: Pitch your idea and prepare your ownbusiness plan.

Think about an idea that you are developing or that you would like to develop in the future. Write down anelevator pitch for this idea. After that, draft a business plan for the idea. In order to get the diploma, you shouldemail the elevator pitch and a draft of your business plan to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org).

3. Exercise to promote leadership. Put your leadership skills into practice.

Volunteer, coordinate, or lead an initiative to get leadership practice. In order to get the diploma you shouldemail a document to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org) that includes 2 projects or initiatives in which you are currentlyparticipating (or you are interested to participate in the future), explaining actions that show your leadershipskills.

3. PRACTICAL EXERCISES

Each student is expected to complete the practical exercises following the guidelines, information and advice presented at the masterclasses. The objective of these exercises is that every student  prepares a CV/Resume, cover letter, LinkedIn profile, elevator pitch, and interview to be ready to get a desired job. 

1. Prepare your CV/resume and Cover letter.

Based on the guidelines presented in this course, create your own CV or resume and write a cover letter for a potential job you would be interested in applying to. Participants who are not currently looking for jobs should still choose a potential future job. We recommend sharing the cover letter and CV/resume with your mentors and/or peers so you can get feedback. In order to get a diploma, email your cover letter and CV or resume to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org).

2. Prepare an effective LinkedIn profile.

Register for LinkedIn (if you do not have an account yet) or log in (if you already have one), and use the tips offered during this course to create a successful LinkedIn profile. In order to get the diploma, share the link to your LinkedIn profile with IMFAHE  (QC@imfahe.org). 

3. Get ready to succeed in your next interview.

In order to get the diploma, email to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org) the answers to the following exercise:.

      3.1 Think about the job of your dreams. Write down the name of the position and the organization where you would love to work (example1: Immunologist at Pfizer.        Example 2: Software Engineer at Google).

      3.2. Study the organization. Write down what it matters for the organization . Think about 5 keywords you should use during the interview to sound aligned with the organization´s mission.

     3.3. Write down answers to 4 traditional, 4 behavioral and 4 technical interview questions and also write down 4 closing questions that you can ask to the hiring manager.

4. Deliver an effective elevator pitch.  

Write down your elevator pitch as a professional and practice giving it to your peers. In order to get the diploma email your pitch to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org).
