International Mentoring Foundation for the Advancement of Higher Education

IMFAHE Courses

IMFAHE has created 3 Quarter Courses (online lecture series), which are devoted to improving the educational development of students and young professionals through international mentorship and collaborations. Students may choose to enroll in only one of the three courses and will receive credit for the quarter course in which they have enrolled. Students enrolling in all three quarter courses will receive credit for all three courses.

Quarter Course 2 (Winter 2020): Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Leadership

  • QC2 Course Description: 

    The format of this course is an online lecture series consisting of a presentation led by an international expert that allow students to actively participate and discuss the topic in detail as it applies to their career development. IMFAHE is aware of the importance of exposing students and young professionals in the early phases of their career development to up-to-date information about how to become innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders. The sooner they have this information, the earlier they will take action to have a successful career with a positive impact on society.

 

  • QC2 Learning Objetcives:

    • Learn about the process of developing innovative ideas
    • Learn important aspects to become entrepreneurs:  How to create a business plan, how to patent and pitch their ideas and how to fund their ideas.
    • Participate in an idea contest to put their innovative ideas to the test.

 

  • QC2 Masterclass Online Classroom. These online masterclasses will take place at the indicated times at the following link: http://zoom.us/j/538787747

 

  • Attendance. As this is a participation based course, your attendance at all seven of the masterclass online sessions is vital. Each student will be responsible is expected to attend the online masterclass at the designated meeting time ready to discuss each topic. If you are unable to make it to a class, you must watch the recorded masterclass and complete a corresponding visualization survey. Each questionnaire is located below the video in the comments section.

 

  • Grading Policies. This course is graded on a pass/fail basis. Your grade for the course will be based on attendance, informed participation, and completion of the practical exercise. In order to receive a grade of “pass”, students must:
    1. Attend all of the online masterclasses (or watch the recorded sessions and complete the questionnaire if masterclass session was not attended)
    2. Watch the five recorded masterclasses and complete the visualization survey for these masterclasses 
    3. Complete the practical exercises. Students who do not fulfill these requirements will receive a grade of “fail”.

QC2 Practical exercises:

  1. Apply the “Catalytic Questioning” methodology to find better questions for a problem/issue/challenge that you are stuck at wok/in your career/in your personal-professional life (you can also practice the exercise in a group). In order to get the diploma you should email to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org) a real situation where you are facing a challenge and you can apply the catalytic questioning (change questions to give a better solution to a challenge). The document should include:
    1. The challenge/problem/issue that you are facing
    2. Write down as many questions as you can related to the challenge. You should invest 15-20 min and make around 40-50 question (exhaustion)
    3. Select 2-3 “catalytic” questionsSelect the questions that are: disrupting the status quo, surprising, never seen before, uncomfortable, generative but worth time/energy to pursue 
    4. Get to workDescribe the actions/work that you are planning to carry out to give answers to the selected questions (what new observations/experiments do you need to do, with whom you need to talk to/networking, money/time investment, etc.)
  2. Pitch your idea and prepare your own business plan. Prepare a potential or an invented business idea. Write down an elevator pitch for this idea. After that, prepare a business plan for the idea. In order to get the diploma, you should email to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org )the elevator pitch and a draft of your business plan.
  3. Participate in an Idea contest. If you are an IMFAHE Connects Member, participate in the IMFAHE´s idea contest Nodal Award-Shark Tank edition. If you are not an IMFAHE Connects Member, find a contest in which to present your idea. In order to get the diploma you should email to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org ) the name of the Team that you are participating in the IMFAHE Sark Tank Contest. If you are not a member of the platform, include the link/information of the idea competition that you are presenting or that you would like to present your ideas.
  4. Put your leadership skills into practice. Volunteer, coordinate, or lead an initiative to get leadership practice. In order to get the diploma you should email to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org ) a document that includes 2 projects or initiatives in which you are currently participating or you are interested to participate in the future, where you are, or you will be putting into practice, your leadership and coordination skills.

SOLICIT THE DIPLOMA: Send all PRACTICAL EXERCISES together with the QUESTIONNAIRES of unattended masterclasses (if any) in *COMBINED IN A SINGLE EMAIL before MARCH 16TH 2020 at 14:00h (Madrid Time) to QC@imfahe.org including in the subject of the e-mail [YOUR FULL NAME-YOUR UNIVERSITY-Diploma Request].

* Note 1: ONLY students or professors affiliated to universities that collaborate with IMFAHE in the academic year 2019-20 can apply to the diploma.

Quarter Course 1 (Fall 2019): Professional Development

  • QC1 Course Description: 

    The format of this course is an online lecture series consisting of a presentation led by an international expert that allow students and young researchers to actively participate and discuss the topic in detail as it applies to their career development. Young professionals and students today face a rapidly developing, global job market. To become a future strong job applicant, there are many skills in professional development which an applicant must master. This course uses an online masterclass format to present key skills in professional development for participating students. In this quarter course, we will explore the steps of how to successfully get a job, how to build an effective CV and resume, how to write a strong cover letter, how to prepare for an interview, and how appropriately market your ability using networking tools such as LinkedIn. In each session, we will examine different aspects of professional development in preparing students and young professionals for the job market, specifically a job in the scientific field.

 

  • QC1 Learning Objetcives:

    • Write a successful cover letter and CV/resume
    • Effectively market themselves for a job (strong job pitch, building a strong ‘brand’, using LinkedIn)
    • Have a good understanding of the interview process
    • Develop skills required to successfully compete for a job

QC1 Practical exercises:

  1. CV/resume and Cover letter. Based on the guidelines in this course, create your own CV or resume and write a cover letter for a potential job you would be interested in applying for. Participants who are not currently looking for jobs should still choose a potential future job as practice for which to write a cover letter for. We recommend to share the cover letter and CV/resume with your mentors and peers so you can get feedback. Once you have completed all the exercises, email to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org) your cover letter and CV or resume as part of this course, in order to get the diploma.
  2. Practice a mock interview. Find a mock interview session, or practice the interview process with your peers or mentors. In order to get the quarter course diploma you will need to email all the exercises to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org) a document listing 5 potential companies or hosting labs where you would like to work in, including the next information: Who are they? What do they do? What is the value that you will bring to the center? This exercise will help you to prepare yourself for potential future interviews.
  3. Write and practice your elevator pitch. Write out what your elevator pitch would be and practice giving it to peers. Once you have completed all the exercises, email to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org) your written elevator pitch in order to get the diploma.
  4. Make an effective LinkedIn Profile. Register for LinkedIn (if you do not have an account yet) or log in (if you already have one), and use the tips offered during this course to create a successful LinkedIn Profile. Once you have completed all the exercises, email to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org) the link to your Linkedln profile, in order to get your diploma.
