2. COURSE DESCRIPTION

The International Mentoring Foundation for the Advancement of Higher Education (IMFAHE) works together with its European Innovation Network to provide students and young professionals with an online education of excellence. IMFAHE is aware of the importance of exposing these students and young professionals in the early phases of their career development to up-to-date information about how to become innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders. The sooner they have this information, the earlier they will take action toward having a successful career with a positive impact on society. This quarter course has the following learning objectives.

QC3 Practical exercises:

1. Career pathways in Science. Chose 2 career paths in science that may suit your values, personality, skills and interests. Create a 5-year career plan for each of the paths (Plan A, Plan B and Plan C), describing where you would like to be in your scientific career in 5 years in each case. In order to get the diploma, you should email the following information to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org):

       a. Two career paths in science (by order of preference) and why you may be interested in pursuing them based on your values, personality, skills and interests; and

       b. Your 5-year career plan for each of the career paths selected (Plan A, Plan B and Plan C).

2. Fellowship, internships and/or grant applications. Based on career plans A, B, and C that you created in practical exercise 1, use the information/ideas provided in the course and do your research to find fellowships, internships and grants that you believe can help you to achieve each one of your career plans. In order to get the diploma, you should email the name/link of the fellowships, companies where you are interested to do  internships, and/or grants that you would like to  apply to in order to fulfill your career plans A, B and C to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org). Also, briefly explain how do you think these opportunities can help you to achieve your career goals.

3. Scientific Communication. Practice your communication skills as much as you can by getting involved in writing manuscripts/grants, presenting in lab meetings/department seminars/conferences, explaining your work to your peers/your family/friends, writing emails to propose collaborations, etc. In order to get the diploma, you should email the following information to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org): actions that you are taking or that you are planning to take in the near future to practice your scientific communication. For example: 1) I want to convince my PhD supervisor to write a review about “…”, 2) I am applying to the grant “…” to fund my research and become and independent scientist”, or 3) I am going to email a colleague a proposal for collaboration in the project “…”.

4. Write and submit an abstract. Based on the “Successful Abstract” lecture, write an abstract describing your work to submit to a conference. In order to get the diploma, you should email your abstract to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org). If you are part of the IMFAHE network, we encourage you to submit the abstract to be selected for an oral presentation at the VII IMFAHE´s International Conference.

QC2 Practical exercises:

  1.  Apply the “Catalytic Questioning” method to find better questions and solutions for a problem/issue/challenge that you are facing at wok/in your career/in your personal-professional life (you can also practice the exercise in a group). In order to get the diploma, you should describe a real situation where you are facing a challenge and apply the catalytic questioning (change questions to give a better solution to a challenge) to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org). The document should include the following information.

1. 1. The challenge/problem/issue that you are facing;

1. 2. Write down as many questions as you can related to the challenge. You should invest 15-20 min and generate around 40-50 question (exhaustion);

1. 3. Select 2-3 “catalytic” questions. Select the questions that disrupt the status quo, are surprising, never seen before, uncomfortable, generative but worth time/energy to pursue; 

1. 4. Get to work. Describe the actions/work that you plan to carry out to provide answers to the selected questions (what new observations/experiments you need to do, with whom do you need to talk to/network with, money/time investment, etc.).

  1. Pitch your idea and prepare your own business plan. Prepare a potential or an invented business idea. Write down an elevator pitch for this idea. After that, prepare a business plan for the idea. In order to get the diploma, you should email the elevator pitch and a draft of your business plan to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org).
  2. Participate in an idea contest. If you are an IMFAHE Connects Member, participate in the IMFAHE idea contest Nodal Award-Shark Tank edition. If you are not an IMFAHE Connects Member, find a contest in which to present your idea (you can find idea comptetitions that may fit you here: https://www.ideaconnection.com/challenges/). In order to get the diploma you should email the name of the Team that you are participating in the IMFAHE Shark Tank Contest to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org). If you are not a member of the platform, include the link/information for the idea competition that you are presenting at or that you would like to present your ideas at.
  3. Put your leadership skills into practice. Volunteer, coordinate, or lead an initiative to get leadership practice. In order to get the diploma you should email a document to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.orgthat includes 2 projects or initiatives in which you are currently participating or you are interested participating in the future, where you are, and how you will be putting your leadership and coordination skills into practice.

QC1 Practical exercises:

  1. CV/resume and Cover letter. Based on the guidelines in this course, create your own CV or resume and write a cover letter for a potential job you would be interested in applying for. Participants who are not currently looking for jobs should still choose a potential future job as practice for which to write a cover letter for. We recommend sharING the cover letter and CV/resume with your mentors and peers so you can get feedback. Once you have completed all the exercises, email to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org) your cover letter and CV or resume as part of this course, in order to get the diploma.
  2. Practice a mock interview. Find a mock interview session, or practice the interview process with your peers or mentors. In order to get the quarter course diploma you will need to email all the exercises to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org) a document listing 5 potential companies or hosting labs where you would like to work in, including the next information: Who are they? What do they do? What is the value that you will bring to the center? This exercise will help you to prepare yourself for potential future interviews.
  3. Write and practice your elevator pitch. Write out what your elevator pitch would be and practice giving it to peers. Once you have completed all the exercises, email to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org) your written elevator pitch in order to get the diploma.
  4. Make an effective LinkedIn Profile. Register for LinkedIn (if you do not have an account yet) or log in (if you already have one), and use the tips offered during this course to create a successful LinkedIn Profile. Once you have completed all the exercises, email to IMFAHE (QC@imfahe.org) the link to your Linkedln profile, in order to get your diploma.
